An introduction to the Korean language. Emphasis will be on oral skills,
but Hangul, the Korean alphabet, will be introduced. For students with
NO Korean background.

The KORA 211 and 212 courses are designed for students who have a speaking knowledge of the language, but who need to learn reading, composition, and aspects of Korean culture related to educated language use.
KORA 211 Introductory Reading for Speakers of Korean I (3)

Not open to students who have completed three or more years of Korean schooling.
Designed to improve the language skills of students already conversant in
Korean; instruction mostly in Korean; introduction of hangul; reading of
simple essays and poems; letter writing.
KORA 212 Introductory Reading for Speakers of Korean II (3)

Prerequisite: KORA 211. Not open to students who have completed six or more
years of Korean schooling. Continuation of KORA 211; grammar, style, usage,
and vocabulary of written Korean; reading of current events and easy essays;
writing of essays about various topics.

An introduction to the sound system and the grammatical structure of modern
standard Korean. In the latter part of the course, various topics relating
to the Korean language will also be discussed: The structure of Hangul and
Korean orthography; how the structure of the language reflects social roles
and relationships; "honorific" language and how it works; government
efforts to deal with "globalization" and foreign words, both from
the West and from Japan.
