Course Overview:
At the University of Maryland, we have established a two-track system of Korean instruction. KORA 101 is the beginning course in one of those two tracks; KORA 211 is the beginning course in the other track. KORA 101 is designed for those with absolutely no Korean background, while KORA 211 is primarily designed for heritage students and those who have been exposed, however minimally, to Korean language and culture. It has been established that this kind of two-track system is beneficial to both types of students, when instruction is tailored to the different needs of each of the two types. Each learns more quickly and easily this way. All students entering the University of Maryland Korean Program for the first time will be tested and placed in a course and at a level appropriate to their abilities and needs. KORA 101 is designed for students with no previous experience with, or exposure to, the Korean language. Those wishing to enroll in KORA 101 will need the instructor's permission.
KORA 101-102 is a two-course introduction to the Korean language and to Korean behavioral culture. These courses place primary emphasis on oral (speaking and listening) skills, but Hangul, the Korean alphabet, will be introduced at the beginning of KORA 101 and used for exercises and transcriptional purposes throughout the course. In addition, through in-class discussions and work outside of class, students will develop an understanding of and appreciation for Korean behavioral culture--that is, the ways in which native Koreans behave on a daily basis in their interactions with others. KORA 102 will be taught in the spring semester.
