KOREAN II
Spring Instructor: Younghi Kim Ramsey
TuTh 11-12:15
Office hours: Thursday 1-1:30, 2106 Jimenez Hall
Telephone: 301/405-1056
Course Overview:
At the University of Maryland, we have established a two-track system of
Korean instruction. KORA 101 is the beginning course in one of those two
tracks; KORA 211 is the beginning course in the other track. KORA 101 is
designed for those with absolutely no Korean background, while KORA 211
is primarily designed for heritage students and those who have been exposed,
however minimally, to Korean language and culture. It has been established
that this kind of two-track system is beneficial to both types of students,
when instruction is tailored to the different needs of each of the two types.
Each learns more quickly and easily this way. All students entering the
University of Maryland Korean Program for the first time will be tested
and placed in a course and at a level appropriate to their abilities and
needs. KORA 102 is the continuation of KORA 101. Students who have not taken
that course need the instructor's permission to enroll. KORA 102 is a continuation
of the skills learned in KORA 101. Each class will open with a simple vocabulary
quiz. The day's lesson will be devoted to exercises that will enable students
to gain accuracy in reading comprehension, grammar, and the use of the "honorific"
speech style. Students will discuss the contents of the short written texts
and practice the grammatical patterns that arise. Writing practices will
be assigned for each lesson. Toward the end of each class there will be
an introduction to aspects of Korean culture, including such things as idioms
and proverbs, jokes, songs, comics, etc. Students will be introduced to
speaking partners for conversation practice outside of class.
