KORA 211: INTRODUCTORY READING FOR SPEAKERS OF KOREAN
FALL Tu-Th 11-12:15
Instructor: Kim Younghi
Office hour: Thursday 1-1:30 2106 Jimenez

Course overview
INTRODUCTORY READING FOR SPEAKERS OF KOREAN is a course designed to improve the language skills of heritage speakers or students who have at least some background in Korean. Such students should already be able to communicate minimally, at a basic level, but are extremely limited in what they can read and write and communicate orally at a more educated level. Instruction will be conducted mostly in Korean, and students are expected to respond in Korean. But the focus of the course is on reading and writing, because this is the part of the language in which heritage speakers are usually the weakest. There are no separate drills or lab sessions as there are in other language courses. The term begins with an introduction of Hangul, the Korean Alphabet, and students will be taught to read with fluency and write with accuracy. Through these lessons basic grammatical patterns, such as particles and verb forms, will also be introduced. As a part of this introduction to the structure of Korean, the various speech styles, especially the formal and informal polite styles, will be taught. Students will be given extensive practice in polite speech. Toward the end of the semester students will be introduced to the reading and writing of simple essays on daily topics.
