KORA 212: READING
FOR SPEAKERS OF KOREAN II
CORE course
Instructor: Kim Younghi
Fall Schedule: T-Th 3:30-4:45
Telephone: 301-405-1056
Course overview
KORA 211 is a prerequisite for this course, and students should already
be able to read and write Korean at an elementary level. If you have not
taken KORA 211, you will need the instructor's permission to enroll. KORA
212 is designed for people who can speak and read Korean fairly fluently,
but want to be able to use the language at a more sophisticated level. Through
the reading of simple stories about Korean daily life, students will be
introduced to different styles of written and spoken Korean. The focus will
be on vocabulary, phrases, and grammatical patterns, including quotative
constructions and indirect narrative. Mastery of verb forms and speech levels
and styles will be expanded. Class sessions will be conducted mostly in
Korean, and students are expected to participate in discussions, also in
Korean. In this course we will pay particular attention to writing, and
there will be a number of writing practices given as homework. Each class
will open with a simple vocabulary quiz. Toward the end of each class there
will be an introcution to aspects of Korean culture, including such things
as Korean proverbs, jokes, songs, comics, etc. KORA 211 and this course
satisfy two of the five course requirements for the Korean Citation. (The
Citation, which is awarded upon graduation, certifies a student's ability
in, and knowledge of, Korean Studies; students interested in the Korean
Citation should sign up at the department office, 2106 Jimenez.)
