to Korean Linguistics
Schedule
for KORA 242
Class Time and Classroom:
Instructional Staff : Professor
Robert Ramsey
Office Hours : TBA
Course Overview
KORA 242 begins with an introduction to the sound system and the grammatical
structure of the modern Korean language. The structure of Hangul, and the
political and linguistic issues of Korean writing and orthography, will
also be covered in this early part of the course. The course then deals
with the sociology of language, including effects of "globalization"
and foreign vocabulary, including words from Japanese. Special attention
will be paid to the so-called "Honorific System" of Korean and
how that system reflects, and is used in, Korean society and interpersonal
relationships. The origins of the language and its history are briefly discussed
at the end of the course.
In order to take KORA 242, some prior knowledge of modern Korean is necessary;
knowledge of linguistics (though useful) is not a prerequisite.
