Welcome to the Arabic Program at the University of Maryland, College Park. The Arabic Program at the University of Maryland , College Park (UMCP) offers courses in the Arabic language, culture, literature, and area studies. This program features courses at all language levels (elementary, intermediate, and advanced) in both Modern Standard Arabic, the formal variety of Arabic used in the Arab world, particularly for reading and writing, as well as in Egyptian Colloquial Arabic and Levantine Colloquial Arabic, two of the major spoken varieties in the Middle East.
The Arabic Program also houses the Arabic Flagship Program (AFP), which is part of the National
Flagship Language Program (NFLP). The AFP was created in April 2005 to address the critical needs for U.S. professionals able to speak, read, understand, and write Arabic at the highest levels of functional proficiency. The AFP offers higher-level students (those at the intermediate and advanced levels of proficiency) a variety of course options specifically designed for professional career goals as well as academic purposes. AFP courses cover areas as varied as Arabic for business, the media, literature, Islamic culture, and international relations
