GRADUATE FLAGSHIP

Graduate Flagship

The graduate Arabic Language Flagship Program at the University of Maryland trains students to a professional level proficiency in Arabic. These programs are partially funded by The Language Flagship.

Students learn both Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and their choice of either the Levantine or the Egyptian dialect. Students earn either a Graduate Certificate of Professional Studies (GCPS) or a Master of Professional Studies (MPS) in Arabic. Graduates are able to use Arabic in their respective professional fields at a superior competency level.

The Program is a full-time, intensive program that simulates immersion and offers an innovative, modular, multi-strand curriculum. This program may be customized for individual students' professional domains.

In addition to offering courses in Arabic language and culture, focusing on all language skills and translation, the Arabic Flagship at the University of Maryland offers area studies in Arabic on a variety of subjects. Sample topics include:

  • Islamic culture
  • Arab-Iranian relations
  • The geopolitical situation in Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq
  • Arabic Media

The program benefits from substantial support from The Language Flagship.
The Program also benefits from its location in the Washington, DC area, incorporating:

  • Distinguished guest speakers
  • Native speaking language partners
  • Cultural exchanges
  • Field trips
