ARABIC PROGRAM

Welcome to the Arabic Program at the University of Maryland, College Park

The Arabic Program at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) offers courses in the Arabic language, culture, literature, and area studies. The program features courses at all language levels (elementary, intermediate, and advanced) in both Modern Standard Arabic, the formal variety of Arabic used in the Arab world, particularly for reading and writing, as well as in Egyptian Colloquial Arabic and Levantine Colloquial Arabic, two of the major spoken varieties in the Middle East. For a list of courses offered at the UM program, click here.

The Arabic Program also houses the Arabic Flagship Program (AFP), which is part of the National Flagship Language Program (NFLP). The AFP offers higher-level students (those at the intermediate and advanced levels of proficiency) a variety of course options specifically designed for professional career goals as well as academic purposes. AFP courses cover areas as varied as Arabic for business, the media, literature, Islamic culture, and international relations. For a full description of the AFP click here.
