OVERSEAS STUDY

Overseas Study

Undergraduate

All students of Arabic are encouraged to study abroad. UM offers both general and Flagship-only options. In all cases, you must consult with an advisor regarding departmental and University regulations concerning transfer of credits toward a University degree.

Credits earned toward the major during study abroad must be approved by the department prior to departure. A maximum of 15 non-UM credits may be applied to the major. Students should consult the UM Study Abroad Office.

After attaining sufficient proficiency through UM's stateside program, students in the Undergraduate Arabic Flagship program proceed to the overseas program in Alexandria, Egypt. Competitive scholarships are available for summer or year-long study.

Study in Alexandria is administered by the American Councils for International Education. Overseas study is a requirement for students in the Flagship program.

Graduate

Unfortunately, due to the discontinuation of federal funding, the Graduate Flagship program will be discontinued and the University of Maryland will not offer an MPS or Certificate in Arabic Studies for the upcoming 2012-2013 academic year.

Previously, students in the former graduate program were funded by Fellowships or stipends to participate in overseas programs in Alexandria, Egypt and Damascus, Syria. We are hoping to develop an alternative MPS program with a study abroad component for future students.
