Who should take it?
All students who have had a learning experience in Chinese or have some spoken proficiency in Chinese MUST take a placement test, unless you have the Chinese program's permission. The Chinese instructors reserve the right to reassign you to another Chinese class if you don't take a placement test or fail to demonstrate your language abilities accurately.
How can I prepare for it?
You don't need to prepare for the test. It is not based on any textbook and there are no preparation materials. Its whole purpose is for us to gauge where you belong in our program.
When can I register for a Chinese class?
Please attend a placement test on one of the above dates. Afterwards, we will assign you to an appropriate Chinese class and remove the registration block.
How long is the test?
You should leave about 90 minutes.
Oh, do I really have to?
Yes. Sorry. You will not be allowed to register if you don’t.
What happens if I purposely do badly so as to get into an easier level?
Once you get to that easier level, we can tell you’re pretending not to know as much as you actually do. We will require you to switch to the appropriate level.
By the way, if you get caught doing this, we will consider it a breach of the Code of Student Conduct, so please think carefully before taking the risk.
