The Hebrew Program at the University of Maryland strives to prepare students to read, write, and speak modern Hebrew by offering courses in the study of modern Hebrew language, literature, and Israeli culture. Our goal is to provide our students with the linguistic and critical intellectual tools to explore in depth Hebrew culture and Israeli history and society, whether for personal or professional reasons.
Currently, there is no Hebrew minor or major. We hope to implement a minor in the near future. Please check back for up-dates.
Courses offered within the Hebrew Program can apply as prerequisites or credit for the major in Jewish Studies.
Check with the undergraduate advisor at the Meyerhof Center for Jewish Studies for specific requirements.
The Hebrew Program offers three types of courses:
- Courses in modern Hebrew language begin with HEBR111 Elementary
Hebrew, which presumes no prior background in the language, and
follow through six semesters of study. These courses prepare students
in the rudimentary skills of reading, writing, and speaking. Beyond
HEBR111, the course sequence is:
HEBR112 Elementary Hebrew II
HEBR211 Intermediate Hebrew I
HEBR212 Intermediate Hebrew II
HEBR313 Conversation and Composition I
HEBR314 Conversation and Composition II
Currently, the sequence begins with the fall semester only. We hope in the future to be able to offer an off-set parallel sequence beginning with the spring semester, but this will be contingent on enrollments and university funding. Stay tuned.
- Beyond the six-semester language sequence, the Hebrew Program offers courses in the advanced study of literary, cultural, and historical topics taught in Hebrew. HEBR381 Modes of Hebrew Cultural Expression introduces students to various registers of literary and journalistic Hebrew, and serves as a gateway course for advanced study. Recently taught courses beyond the HEBR381 level include:
The Bible in Modern Hebrew Culture (Spring 2003)
The Shoah in Israeli Culture (Spring 2005)
- The Hebrew Program also offers courses on modern Hebrew literature and Israeli culture that are taught in English. These courses are appropriate for students with no language background and for Hebrew students wishing advanced academic study of topics in literature and culture. Recent courses taught include:
Representing the Holocaust (Spring 2003)
Critical Approaches to Culture: The Case of Israel (Fall 2003)
Jewish Women in Hebrew Texts (Fall 2003)
The Culture of the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict (Spring 2004)
The Zionist Body (Fall 2004)
Beginning Summer 2004, the Hebrew Program will be offering Hebrew language
and Israeli courses during the summer. More information. |
