Eligibility and Application Process
A student may apply for acceptance into the minor once s/he has completed JAPN 102 with a grade of C or better.
There is a cap on the number of Japanese minors at any given time, so we encourage students to start the process as early as possible. You may initially be placed on a waitlist. Students will be placed on the waitlist on a first-come-first-served basis.
To begin the application process, send an email to the minor advisor with the following information.
a) your full name
b) your student number (UID)
c) the Japanese course(s) you have taken or are taking
d) the semester/year you intend to graduate
The minor advisor will ask prospective minors to visit her/his office hours. S/he will explain the requirements, inform you of your status, and look over your paperwork. Students should bring the Minor Form with the personal information filled in to this appointment.
Application Deadline
There is no fixed window during which students apply. Students may write to the minor advisor at any point in the year.
However, students must apply for the minor before the last day of classes of the semester previous to the semester s/he will graduate.
There are no guarantees that a slot will be open, so planning ahead is strongly urged.
Graduation Semester
Before registering for your final semester at UM, be sure to make an appointment with the minor advisor to ensure you will have satisfied all the requirements prior to graduation.
Students must remember to apply for the minor in the semester they graduate. When filling out the paperwork to apply for your major(s), be sure to add your minor(s) as well.
