Study Abroad Programs
Students of Russian at the University of Maryland have the opportunity to participate in a variety of cultural exchange, study abroad, and research programs offered through the American Council for International Education (ACTR/ACCELS).

- Moscow International University (MIU), Moscow, Russia
Located in central Moscow, MIU was the first fully accredited private university in the post-Soviet Russian Federation. MIU prepares specialists in economics, finance, management, ecology, sociology, and foreign languages. - Moscow State University (MSU), Moscow, Russia
Located in the Lenin Hills southwest of Moscow, Moscow State University is one of the leading comprehensive research universities in Russia and is home to many of Russia's finest researchers and professors in the social sciences, sciences, and humanities. - Moscow Higher School of Economics, Moscow, Russia
Located in downtown Moscow, the Higher School was founded by a group of progressive economists and academics in 1992 and today is widely recognized as a leading institution for the study of economics, political science, business, and history. - Russian State Pedagogical University (RSPU), St. Petersburg, Russia
Located just behind the Kazan Cathedral in downtown St. Petersburg, RSPU is one of the leading educational institutions in all of Russia. - KORA Center for Russian Language, Vladimir, Russia
Founded in 1991 by faculty from the Vladimir State University, the KORA Center for Russian Language Study has hosted foreign students since the summer of 1999. One of Russia's oldest cities, Vladimir is a three-hour train ride from Moscow and a regional capital in the historic Golden Ring.
Eligibility:
- All programs are open to undergraduate or graduate students, teachers, and faculty.
- Generally, study abroad applicants should have completed at least two years of university-level Russian by the start of their intended program. Students with only one year of Russian are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
- Specialized programs are available for both heritage speakers of Russian and those with no prior or formal training in the Russian language.
Academic Credit:
- University students receive academic credit from Bryn Mawr College that transfers to the University of Maryland.
- Summer programs award 8 undergraduate credits.
- Semester programs award 16 undergraduate credits.
- Academic year programs award 32 undergraduate credits.
- NOTE: All prospective participants should consult with their academic advisor to discuss the details of academic credit specific to their individual academic plan.
Financial Aid:
- Fellowships are available through American Councils for the Advanced Russian Language and Area Studies Program from U.S. Department of State (Title VIII) and U.S. Department of Education (Fullbright-Hays) grant support.
- Recent participants have also received substantial support from the National Security Education Program (NSEP), the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, and U.S. Department of Education Title VI (FLAS) program.
