University of Maryland Center for Advanced Study of Language is the nation's only university-affiliated research center (UARC) dedicated to enhancing government language performance in the workplace. NFLC
As a research institute of the University of Maryland, NFLC works to define current and future language needs of the nation and helps build capacity to meet those needs. Through research, collaborations, consultations, and projects, the staff and fellows of NFLC are dedicated to improving the nation's ability to understand and communication with people aroung the world and to manage the unprecendented flow of information resulting from globalization.

SLA Research Lab
The SLA research lab (JMZ 0202) is a dedicated space with computer workstations, audio-visual recording equipment, cameras, digital and analog recorders, and a 'quiet' room for conducting data-based experiments. Software loaded onto these computers includes: Psyscope, SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences), Audacity, and Praat. Students who intend to use the lab and/or check out equipment must reserve in advance through the Graduate Assistant to the Program Director.

Language Media Services
LMS is a support unit within the SLLC which provides audio visual equipment and multimedia support for faculty, staff and students. LMS provides first tier support and training for faculty teaching in the five technology enhanced classrooms located in the building, the mobile audio lab and the computer classroom. Services for faculty include equipment and video/DVD loan, foreign language program recording, scanning of instructional documents, training on equipment use, tape duplication and conversion, and digitization of audio materials. Services for students include audiotape and digital audio file distribution and an independent study space. For more information, please consult the LMS Website.

Center for Teaching Excellence
The CTE is an initiative of the Office of the Associate Provost and Dean for Undergraduate Studies. Its purpose is to support the campus-wide efforts to enhance and reform undergraduate education and to offer tangible assistance to individual faculty and TAs as well as to the departments and colleges in which they work. Internships
The SLA/A Program encourages degree candidates to gain practical experience through internships at local organizations and institutions that work with issues erlated to second languages. Candidates wishing to earn 3 elective credits that count toward their degree may apply for an internship opportunity in the community. Candidates must be in excellent academic standing ang may only apply one internship towards their degree requirements.

  1. What are the requirements to apply for the internship?
    • Excellent academic standing (3.0 GPA or higher)
    • Letter of recommendation from advisor
    • Statement of purpose, after initial meeting with internship supervisor at host institution, addressing the following:
      • Why have you chosen to complete an internship as part of your electives?
      • What led you to decide to work with this specific institution?
      • What are your personal and professional goals and expectations in completing this internship?
      • What are the goals and expectations of your supervisor?
      • What will be the format of your internship? Include an outline of your expected weekly progress.
      • What types of responsibilities will you hold at the institution?

  2. What are the responsibilities of the student in setting up the internship?
    • Express interest in internship during the semester which precedes the proposed internship (most likely during the 2nd semester of study)
    • Decide, with the guidance of language core advisor, on an internship that will best fit academic/research/professional interests and goals
    • Work directly with the internship coordinator to contact supervisors at host institutions
    • Meet with the internship supervisor during the semester prior to the start of the internship to outline internship goals and responsibilities

  3. What are the academic requirements to be completed during the internship?
    • The internship will be graded based on successful completion of the following:
      • One report on a research problem in the internship
      • Presentation at the end of the internship to faculty and students
      • A final evaluation of the placement
      • Up-dated resume to include the internship and a final portfolio of the internship
