Cultura oral y cultura letrada en Indoamérica

Se propone una lectura detallada de textos indígenas y de autores no-indígenas , con una concentración en areas culturales de los mayas y de los quechuas. Aunque siempre respetamos las obras como artifacto literario, la discusión en gran parte se trata de los aspectos etnográficos. Al concluir nuestro estudio de esta literatura tal vez no aceptaremos facilmente la distinción tradición oral y tradición letrada.

Seminario: Vargas Llosa y Arguedas

Lectura e investigación de la expresión literaria y política de dos distinguidos escritores peruanos. Se hará hincapié en la representación discursiva que se trata de la formación de la cultura nacional.

Iconography in the Andes: Guamán Poma
(Co-taught with Sara Castro Klarén, Professor, Johns Hopkins University)

The 600 black and white drawings in Felipe Guamán Poma's El primer nueva corónica y buen gobierno (1613) are the source of intense inter-disiplinary research. The course will examine the interface between the iconographic and the script text using the colonial framework.

Problems in Comparative Studies

Extending comparative theory and practice from literary studies to a more interdisciplinary framework, this course will address key issues in the methodology of comparison of cultures and texts. Topics examined include the role of the Humanities in the academic sphere, the concept of "economic literacy" and globalization as reflected in cultural artefacts, and the practice of conferences in the presentation of research integrating text and theory.
