MW 3:15-4:30 (so that majors and minors who need the JAPN ling requirement and who are now signed up for EALL 300 can switch over to JAPN 438)
Course description: Pragmatics is the study of language use in context. This course will examine a number of basic topics in pragmatics, including deixis, indexicality, and politeness. The focus of the course this term will be on the multiple ways in which the concepts of uchi (inside) and soto (outside) are manifested in Japanese language and culture. All readings will be in English, with examples in English and Japanese. This course fulfills the linguistics requirement for Japanese majors and minors.
