- Is FOLA an Independent Study Program?
No, FOLA is a Directed Study Program where the student's progress is monitored
through class attendance and participation.
- Is FOLA program Self-Paced?
No, there are a defined number of chapters in the textbooks that must be covered
during the semester. The Final Oral Exam is based on the amount of material
covered.
- Is FOLA a Distance Learning Program?
No, attendance and participation at the tutorial sessions are mandatory and absences will result in the lowering of your final grade.
- Will the FOLA program teach me how
to read and write in the language I'm studying?
FOLA courses will enable you to learn basic speaking skills. You will have
to learn how to read what is in the textbook in order to do the exercises.
Writing skills (style and composition) are not studied in the FOLA program.
- Why do I have to listen to the CDs which accompany the textbook?
Listening to and repeating language exercises and dialogues helps you learn accurate language syntax and sentence structure.
- What is on the Final
Exam?
The material that you have studied during the semester is on the Final Exam.
The exam consists mostly of an oral interview in the target language, based
on the elements you have covered in your textbook and on the audio materials. Grammar transformation exercises will be on the exam: verb conjugations/negatives/tenses/pronoun placement, etc. “We did not do this in class” is not an excuse for not preparing exercises in your textbook.
Reading Urdu is tested. If you are not able to read you will not receive an A grade.
