The Spring 2010: Orientation and Scheduling Meeting for FOLA 138-159: (except Hindi and Urdu courses)
Date: Tuesday, January 25, 2010
Time: 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.
Place: JMZ 0220 (sign is posted on glass casing outside of JMZ 1109)
Mandatory meeting for ALL FOLA 138-159 students.
Exception: Hindi and Urdu classes have already been scheduled: please check TESTUDO for times and room numbers.
FOLA Hindi and Urdu courses reach their full capacity very quickly. Please apply for your interview early: April for the Fall semester and October for the Spring semester. Once the class is filled no more applicants will be accepted. If FOLA Hindi and Urdu classes are listed as FULL (0 seats on TESTUDO), please do not apply or request to be admitted into these full classes. Enrollment is strictly limited and students on waitlists are not automatically admitted.
Attention: UMBC Students interested in taking FOLA, Self-Instructional Language Program Courses at UMD:
Please read all of the information on these pages: there are specific requirements that need to be met, such as class attendance, preparedness and participation.
· All students from UMBC must make an appointment with the FOLA Coordinator (e-mail: nya@umd.edu; phone: 301-405-4046) before coming to JMZ 1109 for their interview/permission process.
· All students from UMBC must have their Inter-Institutional Form signed and approved from UMBC, before coming to UMD, College Park for their interview to be admitted into the FOLA Program.
· All students from UMBC are responsible for getting to their FOLA classes on time.
· All students registered for FOLA courses are required to attend class regardless of commute time, other (UMBC) activities, exams, etc.
· Hindi and Urdu classes fill up very quickly: the time to apply for these courses is: April for FALL or October for SPRING. Once the Hindi and Urdu classes are FULL no more students will be admitted.
Please heed the (written and oral) rules for succeeding in the FOLA Program.
FOLA will have no Summer or Winter term courses
The FOreign LAnguages (FOLA) Program facilitates the study of less commonly taught foreign languages (referred to as "Critical Languages" by the United States government). The FOLA program provides a unique opportunity to students who wish to study a less commonly taught language through the self-instructional method / directed study format. FOLA language courses are elective courses. 3 and 6 credit courses are available.

Program Description
The FOLA program is designed to enable qualified students to acquire a speaking
knowledge of certain foreign languages not offered in regular programs on this
campus. The program is self-instructional: the students are required to work
with the textbook, listen to accompanying audio-tapes and to attend tutorial
classes conducted by an educated native speaker of the target language in question.
The languages in question are available at the elementary and intermediate levels
only. Some basic reading skills are involved but writing skills are not taught.
There is one final oral examination administered by a qualified outside examiner.
This program is not available in Summer School or at University College.
