José Emilio Pacheco Winner of the 2003 International Octavio Paz Prize for Poetry and Essay

A Distinguished University Professor and esteemed member of the faculty of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese of the SLLC, a beloved professor surrounded by students, but also a recognized and honored creative writer and critic. So far, in this year 2003 alone, José Emilio Pacheco received singular honors for having one of the top ten creative works in each of two categories, Novel (for Las batallas en el desierto) and Poetry (for Tarde o temprano 1958-2000).

Stop the presses!!

The Lilly-CTE Teaching Fellows and the Center for Teaching Excellence have informed us that the College of Arts and Humanities has been named as the recipient of the Departmental Award for Excellence and Innovation in Undergraduate Teaching for the 2002-2003 academic year. The recipients are Dr. Gabriele L. Strauch and the Departments of Spanish and Portugese and French and Italian. CONGRATULATIONS to Dr. Gabi Strauch and the Department chairs and faculty whose outstanding efforts are being recognized by this award!!

Each year, the German Orphan Home Association presents awards to two or three outstanding undergraduate students in the Department of Germanic Studies. In addtion to excellent grades, the awardees exhibit a passion for the language and cultures of German-speaking countries. Congratulations to Julie Callis, Conal Darcy, and Robert Parker!

Campus hosts Mid-Atlantic Olympiada of spoken Russian

Over 250 area middle and high school students came to the Language House April 25th to participate in the Mid-Atlantic Olympiada of Spoken Russian. Co-sponsored by the University's School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures and the American Council of Teachers of Russian, the Olympiada program is the oldest of all American Councils secondary school activities, dating to the 1960s and 1970s.

Remembering Dr. William MacBain

Professor Emeritus William MacBain passed away on the 9th of April, 2003. Bill MacBain was known and admired not only by his colleagues in the Department of French and Italian but by many members of the larger University community. Among his many important contributions to the study of foreign languages on the College Park campus was the creation of the FOLA program.
