The Undergraduate Committee of the SLLC has selected Brian Real and Rachel Volner to receive the first two Scholarships for International Understanding from the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures in the amount of $1000. This scholarship was established in 2002 by members of the School community to provide financial support for students majoring in one of the School's programs who also meet the following criteria: superior academic achievement; financial need, as defined by the University's Office of Financial Aid; senior standing in Fall 2003. Since the events of September 11th led to a heightened sense of the possibility of international conflict the School's Advisory Council chose to name the award 'The Scholarship for International Understanding' to encourage a greater understanding of languages and cultures in other parts of the world. Contributions to the Scholarship for International Understanding may be mailed to Teresa Miller, Director of Gift Acceptance, University of Maryland College Park Foundation, 7309 Baltimore Ave, Suite 217, College Park, MD 20742.
