FOLA

Currently the FOLA Program of the School of Languages, Literatures, Cultures, offers Dutch, Hindi, Hungarian, Modern Western Armenian, Polish, Persian, Swahili, Tagalog, Turkish, Urdu, and Vietnamese. The mode of instruction differs from that of courses offered in traditional language programs in that the emphasis is placed oral communication skills, listening and speaking. FOLA language courses are Directed Study courses with the elementary and intermediate stages of language study. In Fall 2002 and Spring 2003 FOLA enrollment was: 317 students. The largest number of hertitage language learners are in Hindi, Urdu and Persian.

In November, the Coordinator of FOLA, Naime Yaramanoglu attended the Annual Conference of the National Association of Self Instructional Language Programs (NASILP) where she received an Award for 17 years of service to a Self-Instructional Language Program.
