The Language House Immersion Program
The Language House Immersion Program concludes its 14th year with high academic achievement and broad community outreach. The unique living-learning program provides language learners a great environment to acquire target languages and cultures through daily conversation, performing arts, visual arts, games, cooking, and films. The Immersion Program also encourages students to volunteer to teach at local secondary schools to experience their language teaching skills. By organizing large-scale events, such as Language House Showcase, Maryland Day programs, and frequent open houses, the Immersion Program provides service to increase the visibility of our School.
In addition to the weekly cluster activities, which are conducted in the target language, there are currently three student run inter-cluster clubs, which promote a greater sense of community and interactions for students from all eight language clusters. The three clubs will be expanded to six next year, including:
- Language House Music Ensemble,
- Tai-Chi Club,
- Film Club,
- Aerobic Club,
- International Choir, and
- Web-Site Club.
Many Language House residents are recipients of various awards and scholarships this year. The list includes, but is not limited to following honors: Hirsch Scholarship: Catherine Matacic ( was a German Cluster resident, currently study abroad, and will join the Chinese Cluster in the Fall); Bnai Zion Foundation Award: Ilana Boteach (Hebrew Cluster); German Orphan Fund Scholarship: Robert Parker and Conal Darcy (both in the German Cluster); and University Medal: Allison Bigelow (Spanish Cluster).
