PERSIAN FLAGSHIP - GRADUATE

Persian Flagship - Graduate

Due to the discontinuation of federal funding, the Graduate Flagship program will be discontinued and the University of Maryland will not offer a Master of Professional Studies (MPS) or Graduate Certificate in Persian for the upcoming 2012-2013 academic year. We are hoping to develop an alternative MPS program with a study abroad component for future students. Please continue to check our Web site for program developments and updates.

Thank you to all 2012-2013 applicants for your interest. You will be refunded the University of Maryland Graduate application fee. Please contact the Office of Extended Studies, oes@umd.edu, for further questions or details about this refund.

If you have not yet applied, please do not do so.

If you are still interested in an intensive domestic language learning experience for summer 2012, please consider our Persian Summer Institute. For more information, click here.

For further information or to be placed on a notification list for 2013-14, please e-mail oes@umd.edu.

Academic Options

Master of Professional Studies (MPS) in Persian

This degree program is offered in two tracks, and students in both tracks are expected to complete 30 credits:

  • MPS Track I (Domestic):
Students complete the program requirements over 15 months at the University of Maryland and do not study overseas. Students who select this option may not reach ILR level 3 or 3+/ACTFL Superior.
  • MPS Track II (Domestic & Overseas):
This option requires 36 credits over 24 months of study. Students complete the first 15 months of the program at the University of Maryland, and then continue with the second year of the program in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. This overseas component is administered by the American Councils for International Education. Students complete the final six credits of their degree program while abroad, under the supervision of University of Maryland faculty.

Graduate Certificate of Professional Studies in Persian

The Graduate Certificate at the University of Maryland is 15 credits of coursework over 12 months of domestic study. Language proficiency at exit for Certificate students is typically lower than for Masters students.
