UM offers both general and Flagship-only options. In all cases, you must consult with an advisor regarding departmental and University regulations concerning transfer of credits toward a University degree.
Credits earned toward the major during study abroad must be approved by the department prior to departure. A maximum of 15 non-UM credits may be applied to the major. Students should consult the UM Study Abroad Office.
Undergraduate Persian Flagship students can find out more about overseas study programs in Dushanbe, Tajikistan by visiting the American Councils for International Education, which manages the overseas portion of the Persian Flagship program.
After attaining sufficient proficiency through UM's stateside program, Persian Flagship undergraduate students proceed to the overseas program in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. Competitive scholarships are available for summer or year-long study. Overseas study is a requirement for students in the Flagship program.
In addition to Flagship scholarship, other funding opportunities are available through David L. Boren Scholarships, Critical Languages Scholarship Program (CLS) for summer Persian Language Study, National SMART Grant, Academic Competitiveness Grant, among others.
Unfortunately, due to the discontinuation of federal funding, the Graduate Flagship program will be discontinued and the University of Maryland will not offer an MPS or Certificate in Persian Studies for the upcoming 2012-2013 academic year.
Previously, students in the former graduate program were funded by Fellowships or stipends to participate in overseas programs in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. We are hoping to develop an alternative MPS program with a study abroad component for future students.
