Dr. Amouzegar, a prime minister of Iran in the 1970s, established this scholarship with the goal of fostering Persian studies at the academic level and inspiring capable and dedicated young men and women interested in the fields of humanities and social sciences, as they relate to Persian-speaking societies.

Eligibility: Open to UM freshmen and sophomores who are seeking a double major, major, or minor in Persian Studies at the University of Maryland. Applicants must speak, comprehend, read, and write the Persian language at an advanced level. This is inclusive of all variants of the language, such as Dari and Tajiki, as well as Persian, the standard language of modern Iran.

Eligibility: Open to all UM undergraduate students. Essays must be written by the applicant for a regular undergraduate course offered at UM. The essay submitted should relate, wholly or in substantial part, to Persian studies broadly defined, inclusive of topics in Persian language and literature, and humanistic or social science studies directed at the modern countries of Iran, Afghanistan, and Persian-speaking Central Asia, as well as Iranian and Persian-speaking diaspora communities. The essay must be in English and nominated by the instructor to whom it was submitted in partial fulfillment of a regular course requirement. All submissions must include the essay as commented upon by the instructor as well as the instructor's letter of nomination.

Exceptional students applying to the Undergraduate Persian Flagship Program will be considered for a scholarship. Students must file the FAFSA form (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) in order to qualify and be considered for the scholarship. UM's FAFSA code is 002103. Scholarships are competitive and subject to availability.
Scholarships reimburse the student for tuition spent on courses taught in Persian at the University of Maryland during the academic year. Scholarship disbursements will be made directly to the student's university account.

Applicants to undergraduate Flagship programs may also apply for David L. Boren Scholarships, SMART grants, and the Academic Competitive Grants Program.
Scholarships are available in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. For information about scholarships for summer or full-year study overseas, contact the undergraduate advisor. The overseas portion of the program is managed by the American Councils for International Education.

The University of Maryland offers a limited number of merit-based partial stipends for a maximum of $10,000.
