- How Do I "Oversubscribe" to a Class?
- Contact the instructor and ask if you can "oversubscribe"
the class. [Note: Oversubscription is at the instructor's discretion.]
If the instructor has room in the class, have him or her fill out and
sign a SLLC permission form (obtainable in JMZ 1104), then bring the
form back to JMZ 1104 to receive an electronic stamp; this stamp Only
gives you permission — You must follow up by registering for the course,
otherwise you will not be enrolled. In some cases, the SLLC form is insufficient; you must obtain a university form in
JMZ 1104 and proceed to the Registration Office in the Mitchell Building.
- How Do I Get in to a Class Listed as "By Permission
Only?"
- Contact the instructor of the class you wish to take. Have the instructor
fill out and sign an SLLC permission form (obtainable in JMZ 1104),
then return the form to JMZ 1104, to receive an electronic stamp which
ONLY gives you permission — You must follow up by registering for the
course, otherwise you will not be enrolled.
- How Do I Have a "Mandatory Advising" Block Removed?
- Contact the advisor of the language course you wish to take. Have the
advisor contact the SLLC Undergraduate Office
(JMZ 1104; 301.405.4023), stating that the "mandatory advising"
has indeed been satisfied, and provide the student's name, soc. sec. #,
course and section, and any other pertinent information needed to register
for the class.
- How Do I Register For a Class?
- Register on-line; or fill out an
"Undergraduate Schedule Request" form (obtainable in JMZ 1104) and
take it to Registration (1st floor, Mitchell Bldg.).
- How Do I Locate My Classroom in Jiménez Hall?
- Jiménez Hall is shaped like an H, meaning there are
two wings to the building, with corridors connecting them.
- All room numbers beginning with 11--, 21--, 31--, etc. are located on
the Main Lobby side of the building.
- All room numbers beginning with 12--, 22--, 32--, etc. will be located
on the Health Center side of the building.
- All rooms beginning with 0--- are located in the basement
of both wings, one floor down from the Main Lobby.
- If My Class Has Been Moved, How Can I Find Out To Which Room It Has Been Moved?
- If there is no posting outside your regular classroom, contact the department/instructor
responsible for the course, or check the bulletin board just outside Room JMZ 1104.
- If An Instructor Does Not Show Up For a Class, What Should I Do?
- If there is no posting outside the classroom stating why the instructor
is absent, contact the department responsible for the course, or inquire
at JMZ 1104.
- Where is My Instructor's Mailbox?
- Faculty / TA mailboxes are located in JMZ 3215. Though not accessible directly to students, you may hand your papers, note, etc. for the instructor, to the student-worker on duty in that Main Office or get help from a staff person.
- Where Do I Do I Go To Get Language Tapes, CDs, or Videos?
- JMZ 1204 is where Language Media Services (LMS) houses, distributes and duplicates
language materials. Videos may be viewed in JMZ 2224.
Both of these rooms are located on the Health Center side of Jiménez Hall.
- Where is the AT&T Computer Classroom Located?
- JMZ 1205 is where the AT&T Classroom is located, next door to the
room where language tapes are distributed. It is in the wing of Jiménez
Hall closest to the Health Center.
- Who Do I See to Determine What Level Language Course I Should Be Taking?
- First check the catalog and/or Schedule of Classes for each language
department's placement information. If no information is available,
then contact the language advisor. An Advisor's office location and/or
office hours can be obtained in JMZ 1104.
- The Advisor Is Not In The Office. Is There Someone Else Who Can Help Me?
- It is best to consult the advisor. Please leave a written message in
the advisor's mailbox (JMZ 3215) and/or email the advisor. The e-mail
addresses for advisors can be obtained in JMZ 1104.
- Where Are The Language Departments Located?
- Asian & East European (Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese, Korean, Russian) JMZ 2106.
- French & Italian, JMZ 3106.
- Germanic Studies, JMZ 3206.
- Spanish & Portuguese, JMZ 2215.
- Academic questions should be
directed to the Undergraduate Advisor of the respective department. For general questions, go to JMZ 1104.
- Who Can Give Me Information About the FOLA, Language House, Center For Persian Studies, and Arabic Programs?

- Where Can I Find Tutoring Information?
- At present, we only have tutors for help with Spanish - this info available in JMZ 1104.
Tutoring information may also be found on the bulletin boards in the stairwells of JMZ building, as well as in the Language House, Rm. 0107 St. Mary’s Hall.
- What If I Have A Problem With a Grade From a Previous Semester?
- First, contact the instructor of the class to discuss the grade you were given. If you are unable to contact the instructor and/or cannot resolve the grade issue to your satisfaction with the instructor, then contact the course chairperson to discuss your problem - except for Spanish - contact that undergraduate advisor. If the first and second options do not resolve your issue, your final recourse would be to contact the Chair of the Department to discuss the situation. If none of these options produce a reasonable, satisfactory result, please contact the SLLC Associate Director for Academic Affairs, JMZ 1105B.
- Where Do I Go To Find Out If a Class Is Going To
Be Offered Next Semester?
- Please visit Testudo, and look at the offerings for that
semester.
- Where Can I Find Out When and Where my Final Exams Will Take Place?
- If this information was not included in your syllabus, please visit
Testudo Schedule of Classes.
Consult the information for the appropriate semester.
- Which Departments Give Credit-By-Examination? Whom can I Contact?
- Credit-By-Examination is ONLY offered in the following departments: GERM, ITAL and RUSS. Contact an Advisor or a Dept. Chair for specific exam material. For general information about the procedure, come to JMZ 1104.
- How Do I Find Out My Final Grade?
- In accordance with university policy, instructors in the School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures do not post grades. You may view your final grade via Testudo. Click on Records & Registration, and under 24-Hr Access, click on View Your Grades.
- Where Are The Restrooms Located?
- Women: Rooms 0211, 1210, 2113, 3208, and 4113.
- Men: Rooms 0113, 1113, 2208, 3113, and 4208.
- Is There a Lost And Found?
- First check with your instructor in the event he or she has the item
you seek. If not, check in JMZ 1204.
- Where Do I Go If I Wish To Make a Photocopy?
- Unfortunately, there are no copy machines accessible to students in
Jiménez Hall. Please go to the campus libraries, Kinkos, the BSOS Copy
Center (1105 Tydings), Media Express (Stamp Union), etc.
- Where Are The Beverage And Snack Machines Located?
- Vending machines are available in the basement
